Phytoplankton forms a critical component in the culture of prawns and fish. They serve as food for zooplankton — which are in turn consumed by the cultured species — and can also be directly consumed. Beyond nutrition, they regulate vital pond parameters including pH, dissolved oxygen, and carbon and nitrogen cycles.
Very often the formation of a stable bloom is affected by the micronutrient composition of the water. It is important not only to stimulate phytoplankton bloom but also to maintain a stable bloom — because when bloom develops too rapidly and then crashes, it is highly detrimental to pond ecology.
